Rejoice! Bill Callahan‘s late-phase hot streak continues with his first record since 2013, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest.

After Dream River,Bill’s life went through some changes. Good changes – marriage and a kid – but afterwards, it was suddenly harder for him to find the place where the songs came, to make him and these new experiences over again into something to sing. His songs have always been elusive, landing lightly between character study and autobiography, as the singer-songwriter often does. This felt different, though. After 20 years of putting music first, he wasn’t prepared to go away from it completely. Or perhaps, after all the time, the obvious needs to be made just a littlemore explicit?

First, it’s a different kind of record. Bill‘s now writing from somewhere beyond his Eagle–Apocalypse–Riverheadspace, and Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest is very much its own beast. The songs are, by and large, shorter, and there are more of them. It took almost all of the previous three albums to add up to that many. Plus, twenty’s a lot of songs! But again, it goes a lot deeper than that.

When you finally listen to Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest (outon June 14^th), a feeling of totality, of completeness, will steal over you, like a thief in broad daylight. Après l’album « Dream River », la vie de Bill a connu quelques changements – des changements positifs : un mariage et un enfant. Mais après ça, il lui fût soudainement plus difficile de retrouver l’espace dans lequel ses chansons avaient l’habitude de prendre forme, et comment transformer ces nouvelles expériences en chansons. Ses chansons ont toujours été insaisissables, flottant entre fiction et autobiographie. Si cette fois, tout cela semblait différent, après 20 ans à écrire de la musique, il n’était pas prêt à changer pour autant. Ou peut-être, après tout ce temps, l’évidence avait juste besoin d’être un peu plus explicite ?

Tout d’abord, c’est un genre d’album différent. Bill écrit désormais au-delà de l’état d’esprit de ses trois albums « Eagle » – « Apocalypse » – « River », et « Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest » est véritablement sa propre bête. Les chansons sont plus courtes, et plus nombreuses. Vingt chansons, c’est beaucoup, mais encore, cela va plus loin que ça. Lorque vous écouterez enfin « Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest » dont la sortie est prévue le 14 juin 2019, un sentiment d’entièreté vous envahira. Il s’agit de son premier album en presque six ans ! De quoi avez-vous besoin de plus pour vous sentir complet ?
